Kitchen Tools

Most of these kitchen tools are not a requirement to make this easy monkey bread recipe, but they are helpful tools if you already have them or are looking to add to your kitchen.

  • Pastry Cutter – Using this can make cutting the butter into the flour easier. But a fork will work just as well.
  • Bundt Pan – This is the classic way to bake monkey bread. I currently have a nonstick one that I would love to replace with a silicone one.
  • Biscuit Cutter – This helps to cut the biscuits shapes out that you’ll use, but most of the time I just use a small mason jar.
  • Bowl with Lid – I used this to mix up the cinnamon sugar mixture with the biscuit dough. You could also opt for just a gallon Ziplock bag or use a Stasher bag.

Ingredients for This Easy Monkey Bread Recipe

  • All Purpose Flour – This recipe uses all purpose flour for the dough.
  • Baking Powder – I always use baking powder without aluminum. I like either Rumford Baking Powder from Kroger or Amazon or Thrive Market’s brand of baking powder. You can try out Thrive Market now and get 40% off your first order!
  • Salt – Salt always brings out all the flavors in recipes.
  • Butter – This recipe calls for quite a bit of butter, I like to use grass-fed butter most of the time. Always using real butter rather than margarine gives a rich flavor and it’s better for your health.
  • Milk – Milk is the liquid that’s added for the dough of this monkey bread.
  • Cinnamon – This adds all the warm, delicious flavor to this monkey bread recipe.
  • Cane Sugar – This, of course, is what gives all that sweet flavor, prefect for pairing with a warm drink like coffee or tea.
  • Coconut Sugar or Brown Sugar – This is used to great the glaze for that ooey gooey texture.
  • Powdered Sugar – This is optional, but you can make a glaze to drizzle on top or just top with dry powdered sugar.

How to Make This Easy Monkey Bread Recipe

  1. Preheat – Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Prepare – Grease your bundt pan generously with butter or a cooking spray.
  3. Dough – Mix dry ingredients, cut in 4TBSP of butter, and then add wet ingredients until your dough forms. Flatten dough out with hands to about 1/4″-1/2″ thick.
  4. Cut – Using a biscuit cutter or glass cup, cut biscuit shapes from dough. Then cut each biscuit into fourths.
  5. Cinnamon Sugar – Combine the cane sugar with the cinnamon in either a large mixing bowl with lid or in a Ziplock bag.
  6. Add – Add your cut up biscuit pieces to the cinnamon sugar mixture and shake until coated. You may need to do this in batches to keep the dough from sticking to each other.
  7. Bundt Pan – Once all your dough pieces are coated in cinnamon sugar, add them into the greased bundt pan.
  8. Glaze – Heat 2 sticks of butter in sauce pan. Once melted, add in the coconut sugar or brown sugar if you prefer. Pour this overtop the coated dough pieces in bundt pan.
  9. Bake – Bake for 30-40 minutes until cooked through.
  10. Cool – Allow to cool for 10-15 minutes before removing from bundt pan.
  11. Optional – If you really want to look fancy, drizzle a powdered sugar icing on top with a fork.
  12. Serve – Lastly, serve while warm!

Variations

  • Nuts – Add in pecans or walnuts to this recipe to add some crunchy texture.
  • Chocolate Chips – If you like chocolate add in chocolate chips!
  • Cream Cheese Icing – Use a thicker and creamier cream cheese icing rather than the powdered sugar icing.
  • Sprinkles – Celebrate a birthday or holiday and using sprinkles on top of the powdered sugar icing for a festive look!
  • Raisins – Add raisins to the mix for a chewy and added sweet taste.

Tips

  • Be sure to grease your bundt pan generously with either a cooking spray like coconut oil or I like using butter on a paper towel.
  • When cutting your biscuits into fourths, you can use kitchen scissors to cut quickly or a knife works well too.
  • It may seem silly to cut out biscuits that you then cut into fourths, but I found this works best to keep the dough pieces about the same size and it cooks through better.
  • It’s best to work in batches when you’re coating your biscuit dough in the cinnamon sugar mixture, to make sure you don’t end up with a clump of biscuit pieces.
  • If you have left over cinnamon sugar just pour it on top of the dough pieces once you have them in the bundt pan. Don’t waste that goodness.
  • Allowing your monkey bread to cool for at least 10-15 minutes before removing from the bundt pan is a good idea. This helps it to keep from falling apart.

How to Store

It’s best to serve this warm the day you make it. But if you need to store leftovers, simply place in a glass dish with a lid and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

You can also wrap and freeze it for up to 3 months. Just thaw and warm when you’re ready to serve.

How to Reheat

  • Microwave – heat in 15 second intervals until desired temperature.
  • Oven – Warm monkey bread in a preheated oven at 135°F for about 10-15 minutes.

FAQS

Can I use a different pan?

Yes, you can also use a 9×13 baking dish.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes. Just follow all the instructions to prepare monkey bread then cover and store in the refrigerator and bake the next day.

How do I know when it’s done baking?

When the dough looks golden brown. I also will use a fork or toothpick to poke through some of the dough pieces, if it comes out clean it’s done. Most of the glaze should also be absorbed into the dough after baking.

What is monkey bread?

It’s similar to a cinnamon roll, using dough, cinnamon, sugar and butter. But rather than rolls it’s baked pieces in a pan.
